Urinary diet for cats

Bladder infections are a common issue in cats. In many cases, urinary crystals play a role. The most common type of urinary crystal in cats is struvite.

Struvite is the only type of crystal that can be dissolved with a special diet.

In addition to struvite, a cat may also develop other types of crystals, such as calcium oxalate, urate, and cystine. These crystals cannot be dissolved through diet, but a special diet can often help prevent their formation.

Here you’ll find our complete range of struvite diets for cats. Some of these diets can also help prevent the formation of calcium oxalate crystals. Be sure to check this carefully before ordering food for a cat with calcium oxalate. You can also visit our page on kidney diets for cats for more information.

Struvite is the most common type of urinary crystal in cats. This type of crystal can be effectively dissolved and prevented with a special urinary diet.

Food designed to prevent struvite typically has the following properties:

  • It lowers the acidity (pH) of the urine

  • It dilutes the urine

  • It contains fewer crystal-forming minerals

Does your cat have a type of urinary crystal other than struvite? Then be sure to get advice on the most appropriate diet for your cat. Does your cat not have urinary crystals, but may be at increased risk of developing them in the future? There are also maintenance diets that help reduce the risk of crystal formation. We’re happy to help you find the best option.

This gives your cat the opportunity to discover which wet food they like best! Always choose dry food from the same brand as the wet food — this ensures you get the best results from a urinary diet.
